Engineering Solution: PWS Retrofit
This solution was implemented on existing WxR systems where the firmware for the WxR card was not available. The ASC PWS retrofit shown here was implemented on CAE and Rediffusion simulators. Changing characteristics of the WxR display or adding PWS icons and audio are possible applications:
The important aspect of this implementation is the ARINC 708 video originating at the host computer interface (or external processor). These signals are intercepted by the PWS PC and the data contained in this video bus may now be “massaged” by the PC. In this way, PWS icons may be superimposed, WxR test patterns may be modified, or other various modifications may be accomplished.
The left image is a sample photograph of the result (a test pattern). The right image shows the original WxR image in black & white with the PWS superimposed icon and radials show in color.
